“Healing Rhythms" is a four-part series marking Black History Month and the rich cultural diversity of Toronto. Across the series, you will be introduced to several teachers and musicians — including the Moneka family — who share their rhythms and songs that celebrate family and community.
In the third episode of the series, the Moneka family introduces viewers to the third mood, titled Ishtemiri, through a series of songs that harmonize and integrate old Swahili and Arabic. Learn about the history of the black community in Iraq and Thawrat Al-Zinj – The first black revolution in the world.
